Every company has it's own set of rules and requirements, however there are some basic criteria you must meet to be able to work on a cruise ship.
Good command of the language that will be spoken on board of the ship you are hired for, for the most part that would be English.
You must be at least 21 years old. This is mainly due to the minimum age requirements in some countries to serve or drink alcoholic beverages and/or to work in a casino. Some companies will hire younger applicants but again, that depend on the company and the department you are applying for.
Many cruise employers require the applicant to produce a police clearance that proves they don't have a criminal record. This criminal background is an official document that is issued by the police or government agency of the country that the applicant resides.
All cruise companies require a recent medical certificate. In some cases the cruise line you are applying for may accept such certificate only from a medical center that they have approved.
Applicants must have a passport valid for at least one year from the date you join the ship. This is very important in order to get Visa if such is required.
Depending on the country where you reside and the country where you would work, Visa may be required. In order to obtain Visa you will need certain documents:
- Employment Letter(contract)
- Receipt of payment for visa
- Completed application form
- Additional photo
You would need to obtain some certificates in order to be eligible to work on a cruise ship - for example STCW10 among others. This is a world wide policy and has nothing to do with the Cruise line itself or your agency.
